There are many fires on construction sites (including sites undergoing demolition and refurbishment works) every year. Theses fire result in in several injures and damage to properties. In addition, fires can cause catastrophic destruction to historical properties and monuments under going construction works. Fire at Nortre Dame de Paris on 15 April 2019 is a glaring examples of the damage a fire can cause on a construction site.
Construction sites are more at a risk of fire due to; presence of excessive combustible construction materials available on site (including timbre, card boards and other waste materials) and availability of ignition source from construction processes i.e. hot works or electrical sparks. In addition, an incomplete construction site will have very limited protection against fire in place, hence fires on construction sites spread rapidly.
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, applies to construction sites as well and puts a duty on a "responsible person" on a construction site to carry out and keep up to date, as risk assessments and implement appropriate measures to minimise the risk to life and property from fire. The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 (CDM Regulations) also require measures to be taken to avoid fires on construction sites. A Fire Risk Assessment carried out for a construction sites helps in; identifying the level of fire risk on a site and implementing the fire control measures.
