COSHH Assessments

It is a legal requirement under the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Regulation 2002 (Regulation 6) for every organisation to undertake suitable and sufficient COSHH Assessments and put appropriate control measures in place for all hazardous substances in its use including chemical and biological substances which may pose health risk to its employees, visitors, sub-contractors and general public.

Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) and COSHH Assessments usually get mixed up. MSDS are not COSHH Assessments. A COSHH Assessment is undertaken based on the information provided by the manufacturer (or acquired from other sources) for the hazardous substance (MSDS) and its application to specific activity and location of its use in any given situation.

What are hazardous substances?

  • Any chemicals with a warning label: Toxic, Harmful, Corrosive, Irritant
  • Any substance which has a Workplace Exposure Limit (WEL)
  • Any biological agents used at work
  • Any dust etc.

At SafeScope we assist our Clients in undertaking COSHH Assessments for any hazardous substances used by them.
